For over twenty five years the Halifax Sport Fishing Club has been hosting an annual special needs fishing tournament for mentally and physically challenged kids, and young adults in the greater Daytona area. This event happens yearly on the first Saturday of May.

After the handicap accessible fishing docks were built under the Dunlawton bridge, founding member of the club, Don Monico felt the club should be active in developing a tournament that would insure their use.
A tournament was developed that would bring mentally and physically challenged kids and young adults to the fishing piers for a day of fishing, lunch, awards and gifts for all who attended. With support from the club membership, local business and care givers the program has grown over the years to a highly anticipated and rewarding annual event. Kids who were among the first to be invited are continuing their participation as adults to this day.

Don Monico stepped down as chairman of this event in the early 2000s and Captain Helen Klenk took over the reins to insure this event would continue to serve the needs of this special community of people. Along with long time sponsors, Keith and Dorrie Myhre, the Fishin' Shack, Bobs Space Racers, and other local individuals and business's the HSFC Special Needs Tournament is still going strong.

Fishing rods, tackle, bait, food and beverages along with awards and goodie bags are provided to all attendees. Volunteer members from the club show up in throngs to assist in the fishing and cooking duties. After the fishing attendees are treated to grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. Awards and certificates are presented to those who caught fish.

In 2015 this tournament was dedicated to Aaron Edward Singleton who loved to fish and always enjoyed sharing his love of fishing. A special thank you to Aaron's family for their donation to insure the continuation of this event.
